Growing up in India where English was not my native language, I heard the word "cheers" only when villains in old Indian movies plotted their evil plans while sharing a few drinks with their friends.

Later, when watching cricket, I heard Australian players always ended post-match interviews with "Cheers, mate!" especially Ricky Ponting after scoring yet another century against India, so I continued to believe "cheers" was mainly used by "villains".

Now I've come full circle - ending many of my texts and emails with "Cheers".
